Background Information
After the liberation of the temple of Nephythys, Ryelon and Lewyn return to Brecon, while Farra returns to Erlinia. A funeral for those lost, including Ryelon's father, is organized. Wizards of the Synod come and Lewyn is told that he will have make a choice soon for the order he will join. Tarelle refers them to Var Galdin, more specifically to the scholar Thalindra, who might be able to help them understand the nature of the hourglass, and how to repair it. Ryelon and Lewyn travels to Var Galdin, arriving on the night of Deluge 19 and taking a room at the inn of the Wandering Quill.
Deluge 20, Year 820 (Inn of the Wandering Quill, Var Galdin)
- Lewyn dreams of the temple of Nephythys, and the experience feels strikingly real. When he awakens, he notices that the hourglass resting on a nearby table is gleaming strangely.
- Lewyn and Ryelon leave the inn and make their way toward the library. Along the river’s edge, they notice flood markers indicating water levels from years past. One marker catches Ryelon’s attention—it stands impossibly high and bears the year 855… thirty-five years in the future. When he points it out to Lewyn, the marker is no longer visible. They begin to wonder if these anomalies are linked to the hourglass they carry.
- They pause on the bridge, taking in the sight of a colossal statue rising from the river—a scholar holding a scroll from which water flows endlessly, forming a perpetual fountain.
- As they approach the Grand Library, they notice that one of the four surrounding walls is darkened to an unnatural black. Drawing closer, they see that massive chains are engraved into its surface. The sight is deeply unsettling.
- Lewyn and Ryelon enter the Grand Library and consult the index obelisk at the entrance. When Lewyn states they are searching for Thalindra, his attention is immediately drawn to an office door just beyond the second-floor balcony.
- They knock, and Thalindra welcomes them inside. Presenting a letter of reference from Tarelle, they are invited in and show her the hourglass. Thalindra appears visibly uneasy at the sight of it. After consulting with colleagues, she suggests that Erador would be the best person to assist them—but he has not been seen for two days. Shortly after, another scholar arrives and whispers something in her ear. Thalindra turns to Lewyn and Ryelon, asking them to follow her.
- She explains that a disturbance has been detected in the first underground level of the library and suspects it may be connected to the hourglass.
- In the basement, the three are suddenly attacked by two temporal hounds and a temporal stalker that have emerged from a tear in reality. They manage to defeat the hounds, but the stalker proves overwhelming. When Lewyn attempts to conjure a powerful gust of wind, drawing on the surrounding air to amplify his spell, the air is instead violently pulled away. One by one, they lose consciousness.
- They awaken to find a dog standing over them—one that appears to have defeated the stalker. The creature displays unusual intelligence, ensuring they are unharmed before stepping into the tear, which then seals itself behind it.
